Texas Window Tinting Laws Explained

WINDSHIELD

• Tinting Allowed: Non-reflective tint is permitted above the manufacturer's AS-1 line or the top 5 inches of the windshield (which is called a "brow"). Clear windshield film is also allowed.

• Light Transmittance: The combination of the tint and original glass must allow at least 25% of light to pass through.

• Reflectivity: Tint must not be red, amber, or blue in color.

FRONT-SIDE WINDOWS

• Tinting Allowed: Tint must allow more than 25% of light to pass through.

• Reflectivity: Tint must not be red, amber, or blue in color.

Back Side Windows and Rear Window

• Tinting Allowed: Any darkness is permitted.

• Requirements: If the rear window is tinted, the vehicle must be equipped with side mirrors on both sides. 

Reflectivity Rules

Texas law also imposes restrictions on the reflectivity of window tints

• Front Side Windows: Reflectivity must not exceed 25%.

• Back Side Windows: Reflectivity must not exceed 25%.
